Depression is more than the "Blues."
By Ron Trusler

Everyone gets the "blues" at times. These normally only last a few days. No one is immune to depression. It is longer lasting and more serious than the blues.

What causes depression? Some things are: traumatic events (too many hurtful things have happened), unresolved grief (pain and loss has been held inward in an attempt to "be strong"), or chemical imbalance (medication may be needed to correct this. Not a bad thing).

Too reach a diagnosis of major depression, at least five of the following symptoms, including depressed mood or diminished interest or pleasure in usual activities, must be present nearly every day for two weeks or longer without an alternative physical cause.
1. Not sleeping or sleeping too much
2. Restlessness or slowness observable by others
3. Can't make decisions and can't concentrate
4. Feeling down all day
5. Blaming yourself too much and feeling worthless
6. Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
7. Significant change in weight or appetite
8. Thinking about death frequently
9. No longer interested in favorite activities

Treatment for depression - counseling may be helpful especially if you have mild depression. That may be all you need. If it is more serious, like major depression, you may need medication along with counseling. You may be able to discontinue the medication at some point. However, if not, there is nothing wrong or weak about taking medication for depression no more than taking something for a physical illness. Normally, your family physician will prescribe anti-depressant for you or if you wish you might contact a psychiatrist who specializes in that type of medication.
